Book 103
First sentence: Gussie Feldman didn't enjoy swimming but she did like to lie on the wet sand, in the shadow of Atlantic City's Steel Pier, and wait for the tiniest ripple of a wave to wash over her.
A unique, good novel set in Atlantic City in the '40's. Told from the perspective of various members of a family, the title is misleading but multifaceted. Theme of secret-keeping in families, how they hurt and protect those we love. Background themes relating to the Jewish experience during WWII, immigration into the United States, gender roles, and briefly sexuality. Worth the read, and I look forward to more by Beanland.

Read this for a book club. It's a very absorbing story and I didn't realize it was based on a real person until the end. Having grown up summering at the shore (Atlantic City) it was especially fun.

What a great story! I read this book in the course of one day, I couldn't put it down.
Florence has a goal to swim the English Channel, but tragedy strikes. The story continues in the voices of the people who love her. Seven year old Gussie is a sweetheart. Her sister Fannie is bedfast awaiting her baby, since she lost the last one. Stuart is her swimming coach. Her father Joseph has supported Anna, who escapes Germany as Hitler rises to power. Esther has demanded they keep a secret. The author does a great job creating the interactions among them all. I highly recommend

I liked this book very much. It was a window into the world of Jewish families in Atlantic City at the beginning of the Depression and as Nazi oppression was accelerating in Europe. The characters were engaging and the story unfolded in a way that kept me hooked
3.5 rounded up. For some reason I didn’t initially realize this was a novel so the beginning was very surprising.
