this was this was an endeavor to write which I respect, but ultimately long winded and a bit tedious. every single female was objectified, sexualized and/or fat shamed, including children. initially, I thought the purpose was to explain the flawed male characters, but then the only acts of female empowerment were through flirting or sex. the comments surrounding race also did not age well. do not recommend.

There are some novels which are best as they are . So is [b:American Gods|30165203|American Gods|Neil Gaiman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1462924585s/30165203.jpg|1970226] . It's utter magnificence makes it one of my favorite fantasy novels . After all this is a novel about gods .
American Gods is the story of Shadow Moon , (there are more wierd name - looking at you , Mr. Hightower& Mr. Midwinter. ) an ex-prisoner who gets sucked in between the war of old gods(Odin,Czernobog) and new gods(technology, airplanes). This novel's unique story drew me towards it . So did its cover.
Moreover [a:Neil Gaiman's|1221698|Neil Gaiman|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1234150163p2/1221698.jpg] beautiful storytelling hooked me into this novel until I finished it. How subtly he blends the magic and myths with modernity ?! All the characters were amazing( Todd Sweeney, Samantha Black Crow , Paul Bunyan). American Gods isn't a quick read , but it is great as it is . You should sit back on your comfy sofa , relax, and immerse yourself in this epic world of American Gods.

Didn't finish. The concept is mildly interesting but the characters and plot are boring.
slow-paced
It has been 10 years since I last read this book and seeing it through older eyes was worth the revisit. This is weird, wandering story that is even longer in the unabridged anniversary edition. That being said there is not extraneous story in here, this is a well-built, big, dense tale that takes you across the country on a journey of discovery.
This is a land that is not friendly to gods and that is as true today as it has ever been.

CW: death, corpse, injury, car accident, slavery, stereotypical/somewhat offensive minority characters, adult having sex with a minor
I feel like Neil Gaiman always does this to me- the concept and the beginning are awesome, then its non-traditional meandery plot that I have a hard time with.
And then all the side characters are very caricature-y which are hilarious at best, but not the case for most of the female and racialized characters.
I gave this a very solid try and DNF at 60% when a sex worker was run over by a car multiple times for no reason.

2.5 stars, rounded down.
A lot of people I respect love this book. I enjoyed parts of it, but it’s way longer than it needs to be and there’s so many characters that are basically the same that I never felt “shocked” by the plot twists because I was like... who is that?
Also the unabashed sexism was really painful for me.
The female characters were one dimensional, and all existed to help the male characters. The excessive descriptions of women’s breasts and weight was honestly embarrassing.
