I wish I could wax lyrical about how amazing this book is, but it's only half good. I love everything that happens to the significant portion of the Fellowship. Sam is pretty good, but Frodo, the "main character" is a bloody joke. I get it, you're wearing the One Ring, it's a big burden to carry, but stop being such a dick to everyone, don't split the Fellowship, and maybe take some of Sam's concerns into your decision making process?
To be perfectly honest I much prefer the first half to the second. While so much is going on in Rohan it is a bit hard to get excited about Frodo and Sam handling their long trek to Mordor with Gollum/ Smeagol. That being said, Two Towers is probably my favorite of the series and continues to touch my heart after all these years.
The Fellowship of the Ring is still my favorite (excepting The Hobbit) but I can't give LOTR anything less than a 5 star rating. Fantastic!

the second half of the book is by far more emotionally compelling, though the first half is rich in world building. both are captivating and interesting to read.
