listennnn this isn’t like, going to win a pulitzer but it’s so silly. the audiobook version is the best way to get through this bc of the huge chunks of dialogue. there’s SO much dialogue in this
the characters are so ridiculous and endearing

I usually don’t read series but this was so good that I’m willing to change that. It took forever to get to the meat of the book but it was well worth it. There were some times when it seemed like some important part of the plot got lost (like the contents of the book they were trying to steal) but overall, a well thought out story.

That was GOOD! I LOVED the themes around giving up power & privilege for the greater good. Whenever a historical romance author actually engages with the ills of the time period — ills their protagonists are usually perpetuating — a fairy comes back to life 🤩. Percy & Kit were enjoyable characters with complex backgrounds & motivations & complementary characteristics. The side characters were just as charming and intriguing, with Marian being my fave to NOBODY’S surprise. And the plot had actual stakes, unlike some of CS’s other offerings. Minor complaints: CS and I are never going to see eye to eye about pacing. The middle slowed down significantly, and I feel the wrap up after the central resolution dragged on entirely too long. Even so, this might be my new fave Cat Sebastian!

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb was my first Cat Sebastian read. I listened to it in a single sitting, on a road trip across the American Midwest. I pulled over at least a hundred times to type out highlights & notes for later, but it was still the fastest 10 hours of my life. If you've ever been to our midwestern countryside, you know this is a particularly telling endorsement. All this to say, if you happen to be an audiobook reader, that is the way. It is phenomenally performed and well-balanced.
"Stop looking at me like that." / "No, I don't think I will."
Since finishing in mid-January, I've devoured nearly all of Sebastian's backlist at a breakneck pace and, as I am writing this, it is only early March. I have applied direct pressure on 9 unsuspecting peers to read her work, sometimes purchasing copies myself to mail directly to their homes. I've become something of a evangelical zealot for Sebastian's genius, though I would argue my reading material is more captivating than that of some of my proselytizing peers.
"if you think a single fucking thing we could do together would desecrate anything, you're an idiot"
Despite being an avid romance reader, this sweet love story wasn't really on my radar until I was met by the behest of my father. Where he discovered this gem, I don't know. He generally prefers fantasy or sci-fi reads that are so thick their bindings defy the laws of material science. The most intriguing part of his recommendation was that he is staunchly anti-monarchist and a voracious incendiary of class warfare. I couldn't imagine my father reading any sort of historical featuring European aristocrats, kissing or no kissing. So, I took the bait.
"You've been whoring." / "Good Morning, father"
The Queer Principles of Kit Webb is unfairly charming. The love story had me sighing and swooning (not literally, I was operating a motor vehicle). The first kiss was so beautiful I cried actual tears into my third iced coffee. You will fall head over heels in love with everyone you meet. In addition to a precious love story and an entire cast of compelling characters, the heist plot is engaging and mysterious in intentional and tantalizing ways.
"He kissed Percy as if he were not allowed."
Kit & Percy are pure magic. Their character development is immaculate and their dynamic is darling. Sebastian masterfully writes within the historical context with realistic & satisfying acts of defiance against the constraints of society. She also endeavors to address accountability for the real harms of generational wealth. Their HFN (a full HEA exists in the sequel, I'm not a monster) is a queer ending, indeed, and I know I'm not the only one who was crying into their eighth iced coffee. If none of that convinced you, I'm fairly sure my arachnophobia was cured by adorable arachnid-based antics. If you're afraid of spiders, don't let that deter you, though. It's actually a minor moment but I simply refuse to stop ruminating on it.
"What I had thought were principles were actually manners."
Go forth and, as Cat Sebastian encourages, (read about folks who) fall in love & eat the rich. You can't start anywhere better than right here.
"jerking off to an aristocrat in a wig would be a foul end to the day indeed"
