In the beginning, it was hard, at least for me as a non-native speaker, to follow the story because of the specific vocabulary and the conversations in slang and dialect. But by the middle of the book I got better and still it is beautifully written, almost like a piece of art. It's so detailed and touching that I felt like I was right there with them! The raw and authentic portrait of the time added to that feeling. Kya's coming-of-age story is heartbreaking, but also full of heartwarming resilience. I really like Kya - she's such a lovable and fascinating character! Unfortunately, I found the ending quite weak: lots of events but very little emotion.

This book has been in the bottom of my TBR for a while (I tending to prioritize bestsellers just above the classics when I read), but it was worth it! It pulls at your heartstrings and for those of you that absolutely need it to, has a not-unhappy ending. No spoilers there, but we all know there are times where a sad end isn’t what you need :)

One scene containing sexual assault, and some themes of racism/classism, as one would expect from a book about America in the 1960s.

oh delia, i don’t think you even knew what you wanted this to be — just so much excessive purple prose that desperately needed to be edited down (and this is coming from someone who enjoys dickens)

the non-linear structure was really unnecessary and didn’t at all help with my opinion of the book overall; i found myself entirely uninterested in what was occurring with the crime plot, even as it built up in the second part

I’m not crying, you are. Also the cat made me like it better.
