Okay, I'm addicted to these characters. Fort is progressing with every experience, his family are complicated to the nth degree, and the newly discovered supernatural elements are exciting.

My favourite character is still Suzume. She's a cunning, strong fox with heart, topped with a potty mouth that elicits smiles or cuts like a blade... Legolas or Santa's little helper, Suzume knows how to call a elf spade a elf spade but with hilarious sci-fi or fantasy references. That Fort and Suzume reference sci-fi or fantasy characters, movies, TV shows or books just tickles my inner geek too. I hope we learn more about kitsume culture in future books... hell, Brennan could write an off-shoot urban fantasy centred around them and I'd be shelling out a few quid.

Enjoyed this as much as the first book. I'll most definitely be reading more of this series soon.

"Ah, compartmentalization - my old friend."

The Good

This was a great follow up to Generation V. Fortitude Scott is the youngest of 3 vampire siblings. They each are progressively nicer as they get younger, and we find out why this is. I loved the more in depth look at the Scott family and how Fort came to be basically human while transitioning into a vampire.

I laugh a lot while reading this series. Brennan is great at not only weaving together a believable story with incredibly interesting supernatural elements, but also with making the characters relatable when they really shouldn't be.

My absolute favorite part of this series is the kitsune, Suzume. Her and Fort together on the page is a blend of wit and sexual tension and I love it.

Fort has grown a lot since the first one as well and I just enjoy watching that evolution. The story in Iron Night is about Fort trying to find whoever killed his roommate...right after he finally found one that he meshes well with. It was a unique and interesting journey. So this mystery/thriller aspect is entwined well with the UF universe she has built.

The Bad

There's no complaints for me with this.

The Romance

Fort meets a half-elf that he gets along very well with and you can see the chemistry. They are quite a lot alike. However, Suze and Fort have more chemistry and undeniable tension so it's fun to watch it play out.

Conclusion

A great story. There is a good dramatic mystery to sort out while learning a great deal more about this world that Brennan has made with vampires and more supernatural critters. The writing flows smoothly and there is wit and humor all throughout. I love the characters and have fun watching them grow. Recommended for Urban Fantasy fans.

Reading the sequel to a fantastic new book is always a worry, was it a one-hit wonder, will this be a repeat of the first book but weaker, has the author got any other ideas? Well I am pleased to say that this was a worthy successor, it didn't lose what made the first one fresh and different but it had a new story to tell.

Fort(itude) Scott is the youngest vampire in the Scott family. He is the only one ho hasn't fully transitioned but after his host mother committed suicide in the previous book he is beginning to start transition - something that will only complete when his host father is also dead.

He is now a waiter in a snooty restaurant and still driving the beaten up old Fiesta. However, as he has now entered transition he is slowly being initiated into the family business which is similar to a supernatural Mafia - the Scotts are the ruling family and all other supernaturals pay tithes and swear allegiance to them, specifically Fort's mother Madeleine.

When Fort finds his new flatmate murdered in suspicious circumstances he and Suzume, his kitsune friend, investigate even though his family have framed a pair of criminals and conveniently had them killed off. The investigation leads Fort to get involved with more of the supernatural community including the Neighbours and the Ad-hene (both alternate names for the fae).

One of the things I like about this series is that Fort is such a beta hero. He has a minimum pay job, a beaten up old car, a grotty apartment and gets beaten up regularly. Although he has been working out since his transition began he is still much weaker than most other supernaturals. I also enjoy Suke's pranks as much as Fort does.

Recommended for people who are bored of uber-sexy brooding, centuries-old, billionaire vampires and root for the underdog.

It was a fun book and subverted a couple of my expectations.

After a rough start (I think, I've just been in a bad/not the right mood for the book at first) I really liked this book.

I love Fort and especially Suzume and their friendship (I'm just not sure about the potential lovestory between these two. *grumbles Why? at the author*) I like the other characters (Fort's as well as Suze's families and friends) a lot and I'm very curious how everything will pan out.

The story was solalala. The beginning dragged a bit (which could be more a result of my mood than the story itself) but picked up and I liked Fort and Suze investigating the deaths and trying to find out who's behind it.

The relevation about Fort's upbringing? Oi. This will be interesting. As the further relationship with Matt will be - if there is one.

All in all an enjoyable book and I'm looking forward to the next part. :)

The second of the the three Generation V books that I won in a raffle at Phoenix Comicon this past weekend, Iron Night delivers a story and characters just as good as the first book.

I'm really impressed with the series so far and will be starting the third book shortly. I've already recommended that my husband read them and am interested to see where the series goes. So far, so good - the author's been consistent with character decisions and motives and the story is paced very well. Recommended for fans of urban fantasy/supernatural books.

Again another 3.5. Building up Fortitude's world quite intriguingly as he gets more and more involved in the family and the family business, the story does move along exceedingly well. The world building is impressive and almost Dresden like, bits and pieces of information drip fed until a cohesive whole emerges. The set up for the overall story arc is interesting and the family dynamics promise a whole lot of fireworks up ahead. Chivalry Scott plays the good elder brother who looks the most likely to get bumped off in the future installments (Mark my words). The love angle seems to be a bit of a drag as of now.

This one got extra points for multiple Firefly references.
