Good body horror and a classic sci fi plot but the racism was omnipresent and not even in a way where it provided an interesting societal mirror. if you want to read wells the time machine is a much better read

Wow! I mean I tried reading The War of the Worlds and failed miserably. If you can make a novel about an alien conquest sound boring, then there isn't much hope that I'd ever like anything you'd write. While playing Book Bingo, I landed on a category that fit this book beautifully. So, I decided to give Mr. Wells another go.
I am so glad that I did! Suspense colors the atmosphere in the story and there is a stench of violence waiting to happen. Why don't scientists ever learn? I kept cringing every time the humans faced the monsters (Moreau could give Frankenstein a run for the money)! Some were near misses and some events just foreshadowed the darkness that was to come.
The edition I read also came with a summary of H. G. Wells' life history. He had been involved in the formation of the League of Nations. Cool!

Well written plot with great imagination behind the horror of this book and the tense moments depicted. I loved the curiosity behind learning the backstory of the plot and who Doctor Moreau is as an individual and the horrors of the products of his work. Only nitpicks being a few explanations and reasons throughout the book weren't clarified very well.
I am giving this book five stars because I will never forget it.
Don't argue with me. My mind is made up.
(ok, so I have other star reasons, too)
I will also add that below is the photo that was on my awesome day calendar today.
(This is a leopard for all those that have been living in a dark cave)
Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
If you don't know anything about this book and don't want to know anything about it, stop reading now.
Years ago I had an animal science class taught by one of those "cool" teachers that showed us the Dog Breed Info website for a whole semester and then topped it off with a movie. This movie was The Island of Doctor Moreau (Marlon Brando version). Unfortunately, this was a one day rental, and we were only able to watch 35 minutes of it.
Yet I couldn't forget it. I rented it about ten years later and watched the whole movie. Was it a little cheesy? Yeah, sort of. But the STORY. What a great STORY.
The book is short at less than 130 pages. It is the way I prefer my books to be - well written and to the point with minimal clutter. Wells gives you free range to use your own imagination to create the creatures and the surroundings by using very short yet very effective descriptions and/or names. You can draw your own ideas of what a Leopard Man would look like or a Hyena-Swine based on the names. You can imagine how they would act if they were to regress back into their former instincts after attempting (and failing?) to make them more humanlike in their appearance, speech, actions, etc. Imagine what these creatures would look like in the experimental stage - keep in mind that the transformation hasn't been perfected. Now imagine being on an island with these experiments.
I don't know about you, but it SCARES THE CRAP OUTTA ME.
This is a little sci-fi and a little horror and a little classic and a littleromance. Ok, scratch the romance. There is violence and indecision. You may question your current beliefs or find beliefs that you never even knew you had.
FIVE STARS FROM BEGINNING TO END.
