A heartbreaking conflict of conscience and faith!

This is a fascinating love story set against the back drop of religious fanaticism and tells the story of Zeb and Laur who whose relationship is in direct conflict with their faith. I was intrigued but very conflicted by this story. I had to keep reminding myself these characters were raised in a religious environment that dictated every aspect of their lives. It was just so difficult to fathom and had me very deep in thought. Given the same circumstances would I choose faith or heart? I would hope that my heart and my conscience would win out but given the extremism at play, I understood the characters choices and the difficulty they had coming to terms with them.

Although this story wasn't exactly what I expected, I was invested throughout. I can't say the characters were exactly relateable but given the circumstances, I felt as though I understood them well. My biggest wish was to have more from them after the fall, after their conscience rammed into their faith leaving both in rubble. To me that would have been the bigger story. Who knows maybe it's a story yet to be told.

This is a story that seems more nonfiction than fiction! Charity is able to pull you into her world like a magnet until she releases you. At that point, you are desperately wanting to hang on for more! You will find that with this story. My emotions were everywhere with this book. The only issue I had with this novel was that it ended way too soon :-(

I think my expectations for this book got the better of me. After reading the blurb, I thought I was going to get a dark and twisted erotic romance type of read. Which unfortunately wasn't the case. In fact, in my opinion, the blurb is a bit misleading as it really only covers the last 20%ish of the book. That said. it wasn't a bad book by any means. The writing itself was very good, but it was SO slow moving and long that I struggled to stay engaged. I almost gave up several times (the last 20% did kick up in pace). Throw in a bunch of unlikable characters (I legit wanted to throat punch Laurel Ann for her constant judgmental attitude), huge time jumps, things that didn't quite make sense to me, and lord save me,
Spoiler sibling sharing
and it just wasn't a massive hit with me. It happens...

The cover, on the other hand, is ALL kinds of awesome.

I had to give it a couple of days to gather my thoughts on this book, as my brain was reliving so many parts. One thing for certain, is this has been added to one of my top reads of the year! I like a story that pushes boundaries and this book totally ticked that box. A religious cult that is so wrapped up in their teachings, having been isolated from the outside world, questionable practices have become the norm. There’s an undercurrent of evil and nasty revelations occur throughout the story making this an addictive page turner. I cried, I threw my kindle in anger at the unfairness of the life that the characters led, and I got all hot and bothered with the magnetic, smouldering chemistry between Laurel Ann and Zeb. Always fascinated with this subject and it’s definitely a story I won’t forget!

I loved it! It was dark...at times raw. The themes were Truths that happen to many people, across different cultures—cult or no cult. In between the pages are lovers, people trying to find meaning and sense in the world. Whether they're misguided or not, for them, at least it's their reality. I see this book as an allegory of the world. The small place, where people are wicked, selfish, loving and in some ways self-destructive. It mirrors our world, even though this mirror is distorted. It was a fantastic read!
