i’m several years late but gimme a break
i think i’ve read almost every Nicholas Sparks books because they are set, usually, in the parts of SC or NC that i’m from! it’s always nice to read something and SEE what’s being described
this book was soooo good. it was well written with such a good plot of “we shouldn’t be together but we want to.” because they’re both dealing with their own personal issues, but they feel fated for each other!! i’ll eat it up every time i fear!
definitely an easy read too with such good material

The movie adaptation was actually pretty good... The whole time I was cringing about, "omg, they have a High School Musical kid?!" But after a few shower scenes, "OMG THANK GOD THEY PICKED HIM!"
Aside from my lusty outburst, the story is well crafted, constructed, and keeps you enticed throughout the duration of the novel. I specifically love how accurate Sparks is with the military terminology and details, which only further enhance the reader's experience with the novel.

Look, I will make this clear: This novel is very cliche, right down to the scene in the old school Italian restaurant where the owners know everyone. The plot is also very cliche and quite predictable. BUT nobody reads Nicholas Sparks novels because he is an innovative writer who challenges his reader at every turn. People read Nicholas Sparks novels because they transport you to a perfect place where perfect love is possible, and that's what this book does for me. It's a simple read, the characters are annoyingly cliche, but I can still close my eyes and imagine myself there and it still brings a smile to my face.
So in a nutshell:
Do Not Read This IF:
- you like to be challenged
- you hate stereotypes
- you want something edgy and "outside the box"
Do Read This IF:
- You want to feel transported
- You like to fantasize about "true love"
- You have a thing for good looking soldiers and dogs
