This was okay...

I liked the first book better. This one was just okay. Good storyline, well-written. The delivery just didn't "wow" me.

In the last book we were reading about Reni and issues with her personal life and resolving problems with hint of Detective Daniel Ellis's peppered in. This book deals with his issues with is mother's disappearance and unresolved feelings with his ex wife while trying to find her missing daughter.

My prediction was that Emerson was involved in her kidnapping so that Daniel could rescue her like he did previously because of her hero worship and thinking he was her father. Because what was were my head was going I did overlook other hints along the way. I completely overlooked the social media aspect of the book and that was a big part of it.

I really liked this book I didn't see the twists coming or predict how it was going to end. I would love if this series continued so you can see how they work together without it being so personal and how they would deal with Reni's mental health in the field.

Three girls go missing on a technology-free hike, leaving behind nothing their tents and the body of their guide. Reni and Daniel, fresh off their partnership hunting the grave sites of Reni's father's victims, investigate their case and hope to find all the missing hikers before something goes even more terribly wrong.

This is a cleverly plotted book, well-written and with a strong sense of place. Reni and Daniel felt like real people to me, albeit with unusually traumatic pasts. I felt the same sense of urgency as they did to find the missing hikers. As for the plot, there were enough hints dropped for me to try and puzzle out the mystery, but also cleverly foreshadowed twists I did not see coming.

My one complaint is that this book does not quite stand alone, as a less engaging subplot about Daniel's mother continued on from the previous book, and I was not particularly wowed by the subplot's resolution.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.
