I've not read this since I was a child and had completely forgotten the stories, just remembering the basic premise that it is a tale of sisters. While I was initially a bit dismissive of the old fashioned and twee stories within I couldn't help but become fond of it. While Mrs. March is bringing up her girls to be good little homemakers, with a lot of moralising on the way, she is accepting of their choices. Jo's nonconformity was particularly inspiring.

Confession: I never read this as a teenager. So when my book club picked it this month, I was side-eyeing it like “ah yes, a wholesome 19th century domestic novel, just what my brain craves after a day of existing in late-stage capitalism.”

Shockingly though - I liked it. It’s basically the book equivalent of sitting by a fireplace while someone hands you hot chocolate and tells you to stop being dramatic. Very cosy. Very soft.

The sisters were surprisingly fleshed out (Meg = eldest daughter energy, Beth = cinnamon roll too pure for this world, Amy = chaotic gremlin, Jo = patron saint of girlboss chaos). Unsurprisingly, I’m basically Jo if she had access to coffee shops, Google Docs, and a TikTok account where she ranted about literature at 2am.

Is it my new favourite? Nah. But it was comforting, unexpectedly fun, and I finally get why everyone’s obsessed with Laurie (although let’s be honest… justice for Jo, because that ending? No).

My actual edition is the penguin threads edition but it’s not showing up, so sad.

Part 1: 4.5/5
Part 2: 4/5
Overall 4.25/5 stars!

I definitely liked part 1 more. But I actually did still enjoy part 2. Everyone says that part 2 is not as good as part 1 so I was skeptical. But I did enjoy it!

I went in with Jo being my favorite of the sisters. I still love her and I grew in the second part to love Amy. Meg is probably my least favorite. And then Beth, I love quaint Beth so much.

For a classic I read this fast. I would’ve read it faster if the other book I was reading didn’t encapsulate me and let me not want to read anything but that. But I’m so glad I finished it and read it. I really enjoyed it. Not too much happened but I get that it’s what a lot of classics are. I loved seeing the sister grow up and their family and families.

Now I can see the movie! Yay!
