Basically just extracts from books that I have already read, but still nice to revisit them.

Mooie inleiding in het werk van Toni Morrison, met fragmenten over ras uit haar boeken en twee volledige verhalen/essays. Making America White again, het laatste essay, is scherper dan menig artikel dat deze dagen verschijnt...

Now I reaaaally have to finally pick up a full novel by Toni Morrison. I can tell they're good just by the excerpts in this book.

'She has seen it lurking in the eyes of white people. So. The distaste must be for her, her blackness. All things in her flux and anticipation. But her blackness is static and dread.'

“I wanted rather to feel something on Christmas Day. The real question would have been “dear Claudia what experience would like on Christmas” I could have spoken up, “I want to sit on the low stool in big mama’s kitchen with my lap full of lilacs and listen to big papa play his violin for me alone.”
The lowness of the stool made for my body, the security and warmth of big mamas kitchen, the smell of the lilacs, the sound of the music, and since it would be good to have all of my senses engaged, the taste of a peach perhaps afterward.

The excerpt from Song of Solomon was really good and the short story Recitatif was excellent.

The essay at the back of this book was so incredible and powerful - Toni Morrison is a gem. I also really want to read Song of Solomon now.

This isn’t what I expected it to be. Somehow, I expected this to be an essay but it’s a selection of some of Morrison’s novels. The parts are taken from Beloved, Song of Solomon and The Bluest Eye.

In a way, it’s a good way to see if any of Morrison’s work appeals to you. And it is a good look at the idea of race from the point of view of African American people.

The only criticism I have of this is that it was a bit jarring to move around in the pieces. There was one part in the selection from Song of Solomon, where the chapter is chopped in quite an odd place. So it didn’t seem to flow well, from that point of view.
