this book is very well written, and some stories are really great, but it's mixed in with a textbook of worldbuilding. I liked it a lot but I wouldn't recommend it to many

June 2019 // Well, what can I say? I’ll admit, I expected this read to turn out to be long and wearisome, but boy, how wrong I was! Sure, some parts were exciting and some weren’t (surprisingly, I didn’t really enjoy the tale of Beren and Lúthien? probably because I’m not a big fan of romances in general), but all in all, I loved this book to pieces. And if it’s possible, I’ve fallen in love even more with the Tolkien universe now that I know how it all began. I feel nostalgic when I think of Aman, and Númenor, and Beleriand with its great and fallen cities and realms (Gondolin, Nargothrond, Dol-lómin, Doriath, and many more) and how I wish Middle-earth were real! (I’m sure it’s real. I’m sure Tolkien dwelt there after he died.) After such a read, one can’t say Tolkien wasn’t a freaking genius.

Avril 2021 // Masterpiece. Period.
