Got to Chapter 10 but have not picked this up in several months… DNF for now but honestly the only reason I was trying to read this is backstory for The Rings of Power tv show so not likely I will continue
I expected some kind of ancient, impenetrable tome. Obtuse, inaccessible, and above all, dry and dull. And at times it can certainly be those things. But I found the Silmarillion to be a true treat to read. Epic in every sense, simultaneously broad and intricately detailed. It felt like reading something like Beowulf or the Epic of Gilgamesh, but not quite as difficult to understand. (Emphasis on quite)
The only part of the book I genuinely disliked was the chapter "Of Beleriand and its Realms." Which was basically just a chapter of geography... so ya know... not the most intriguing thing.
So anyways, I really liked it! It's good! 10/10! 5 stars! 100%!
Also Morgoths a total bitch like holy shit. Dark Lord my ASS bruv.

Ok, 5 stars for writing. Impeccable as always. Probably a 3 stars for reading comprehension on my part haha. Very dense, but so so interesting. Andy Serkis killed the narration, as always. I listened without trying to absorb every single detail - mostly so that when I do a physical reading, hopefully things start clicking more. But it’s amazing the level of detail and care and thought that Tolkien put into his work. It gives Middle Earth such depth and history, you really feel like you can just get on a plane and go visit, or crack open a textbook and see it all laid out there. His talent is inspiring.

I'm not sure how to rate this. It's undeniably epic, but large portions of it are not engrossing for me, and I was easily distracted from the audiobook. My favorite part is the tale of Beren and Luthien. I also enjoy the beginning, about the creation of Eā and Arda, and the ending, which is an overview of Sauron making the rings and eventually being destroyed.

Combined with LOTR, this is five stars. Pretty incredible layering of world-building and tales. This deepened my appreciation for the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy but also for epic fantasy written in the years since. I enjoyed how each tale was unique yet coherent within the greater story being told. I’m sure there is more to say both positive and negative, but I cannot adequately express it.
