Linear text with weepy main character and a tone often derived from description of setting. Okada's writing style is like that of other male American authors in the 50's, including John Steinbeck, James Baldwin, JD Salinger and John Knowles, which is to say it is straightforward. Had he wrote this a few years later, he may have opted for a more collegiate style, a-la Ken Kesey or Phillip Roth. This book is like Baldwin's "Go Tell it on the Mountain" or Steinbeck's "East of Eden".

Like those, the characters are front and center, and their lives come in and out of focus using ambling scenes. The main character is often isolated, but when dialogue ensues, sometimes action slices through and alters the story in unpredictable ways.

Enjoyable as a novel, its rare perspective and especially its awareness of location bring out a kind of warm contentment. The author's unflinching documentation of events plus his candidness eases the reader through sorrowful experiences and embues them with sincerity.

regretfully, i cannot stand the writing in this

first clear warning sign was on page 6:

Being on Jackson Street with its familiar store fronts and taverns and restaurants, which were somehow different because the war had left its mark on them, was like trying to find one's way out of a dream that seemed real most of the time but wasn't really real because it was still only a dream.

managed to get four chapters in but the experience was bad so i stopped
