Note: Kindle Version. Good grief, already, we *know* the author knows all there is to know about forensic anthropology, and there is no need to give every detail of every bone in a suspense book. The mystery is ok, but you have to wade through a ton of forensic details to get through the first half. I am usually a fan of Kathy Reichs, but this one was disappointing.
Definitely liking the format of the story: opens with Tempe coming into consciousness in the dark & finding herself bound then flashbacks as to how it all began interspersed with her effort to escape.
Really did not like where there are so much anger & frustration - is it all necessary? Is it like that in reality with forensics? Especially didn't like where Tempe knows she's angry and she's going to be rude but doesn't care anyway. During those parts of the book, I nearly decided to give up but... I pressed on, being a loyal fan (don't know how much longer this will last...)
However, the last, perhaps, 1/3 of the book was truly enjoyable. When everything was falling into place even though Tempe didn't quite realise until right near the end who really was her kidnapper, and her determination & courage was admirable.
Still, I won't be in a hurry to read the next installment...

Finally finished this one! I bought it a view years ago and didn't know it was part of a series. I think I would have liked it more if I started with book one, but I didn't feel like I missed a lot of info.
The plot was very clear from the beginning so that was disappointing.
There were so many names thrown around that I got very confused a lot of times.
I also found out I dont really like criminal investigation books.

A soft 3 stars. This latest Temperance Brennan novel has all the ingredients to make something good but somehow the ingredients don't gel together. The three plot lines : A (the bad guy at work), B (the grannies serial killer) and C (Temperance's relationship with Ryan) mix like water and oil not vinegar and oil.
Reichs still amaze me with her sense of the places her characters are in. I can totally buy and feel Temperance's visit to Chicago and know that it's accurate, get a feel of the place. Why? Because I live in the other place Temperance works and Reichs nails Montreal, the Laurentians, Oka. Tiny, little thing Laval University is not in Laval but Québec City but really I'm nitpicking.
So, good ingredients, bad mix because it's not a sign of a good Brennan novel when the reader less than half way through knows who the bad guys are and starts yelling at Tempy to get a clue.

This one is a little different than the other books but in a good way
This is one of the more intriguing books of hers that I have read recently. It starts out with Temperance Brennan tied up, very cold, inside a small chamber. She has no idea how she came to be there.
This book has Temperance doubting her own competence, as she botches two cases in Montreal.

3.5 stars. I got really into the last third of the book but the first two thirds dragged a little. I love this type of mystery though-anything involving pathology and forensics has always morbidly fascinated me. There were multiple intersecting storylines happening, which was slightly confusing at times but I was able to keep track. The hook was definitely opening with Tempe being buried alive and then going back and forth to what led up to it and checking back in with her in the tomb. That was a cool way of keeping the reader invested. I recommend if you like this kind of story!
Not exactly the strongest one in the series. On the one hand there's more background info on Tempe and other people in her life, which is nice. On the other it was just a tad too obvious who her bad guy was (at least to me).
It also took surprisingly long for the story to hit its stride, but once it did I couldn't stop reading.
