I think it's so admirable that Malala uses her fame to lift up the voices of other girls and women from around the world. The stories included in this book are heartbreaking, but also paint a picture of indomitable strength, courage, and resilience.
I will say that I'm not sure this was the best choice for the book club I lead for young women who came to the U.S. as refugees. It was too heavy at several points, and I could tell they wished for the discussion to shift towards something more positive. That being said, I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about the refugee experience, especially through first person narratives (the only way these stories should be told, in my opinion).

It feels so wrong to rate the stories of those wonderful girls. I feel so proud.
„On that trip, I learned a new word: luchadora. It means ‘female fighter’ in Spanish. While some luchadoras battle for glory, the girls I met that day were fighting for education and a better life.“

While Many stories in this collection are heartbreaking, they are eye opening and powerful. As a nation, we need to be more eager to have empathy for the displaced, give Aide to those seeking refuge, and create a story of kindness to all, no matter what their skin color and what their story is. This is a book that will help create that empathy for the oppressed, and one our Nation needs to learn and practice. Lead with kindness and empathy.

A really tough and inspiring read, Malala Yousafzai is an incredible role model I'm glad I read her story and learned how through her work she has connected with the other women in this book.
I bought this for 99p on Kindle but after reading the collection of stories and learning that proceeds for this book go to supporting the Malala Fund I plan to buy a physical copy.

In Malala Yousafzai’s latest book, a number of women and girls share their experiences as immigrants and refugees. We Are Displaced humanizes the statistics and challenges narratives that often make it easy for one to disconnect from (or worse, degrade) immigrant and refugee people. The stories shared are full of incredible journeys that so many people, people that could be you and me, go through for a matter of survival. They are stories full of heart, strength, and commonality.
