Okay, so Book 2 throws down similar vibes to Book 1—it’s like Stargate had a baby with 10 Things I Hate About You. Classic teenage drama meets high-stakes space chaos. I’m 100% here for it.

But this one adds a whole new layer of Doctor Who madness. I’m talking full-on timey-wimey, interdimensional, physics-warping mind fuckery. And if I'm being honest, kinda love the chaos.

That said... it didn’t land as hard as Book 1. The tropes felt a bit too familiar—like a remix rather than something new. The romance between our two leads felt more surface-level compared to Kady and Ezra. Not that I didn’t love Nik—he’s perfected the “just teasing, totally into you, but shut up about it” vibe. He’s all swagger and wounded charm. Very delightful.

Hanna, though... still not sure. She lives up to her ‘princess’ rep just a little too much. That’s the nicest way I can put it.

Still, a solid sequel. I’m continuing, obviously. But I suspect Book 3 might end up feeling a bit too copy-and-paste for my taste. We’ll see.

I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book, but it was still really good! I got a lot sciencey at the end, but I was still able to understand. This one did have some creepy elements, but not as creepy as the first. It was also hard to follow a new set of characters, but I enjoyed them.

I have mixed feelings about this book because I liked the plot, and generally like epistolary novels, but felt that the format actually interfered with the plot.

First, a disclosure: I don't have great eyesight. I "read" a majority of my books in audiobook, not just because I have a multi-hour commute everyday (which I do), but also because it's not that easy for me to read books, especially in paper, and especially at night (which is the majority of my non-driving free time). E-books can be easier because you can make the font bigger, but that didn't seem like a good option for this book because of the creative formatting. I bought the hardcover as soon as it came out, as I wanted to see where this series was going and really enjoyed the first book in the series. And then there are pages which have a black background, some white text, and then some text which is gray. Dark gray. On a black background. Dear editors - this is damn impossible for people with sub-awesome eyesight to read. Please never do that again. Invest in some damn color if you insist on such creativity in the pages, but dark gray on black had me holding pages up to the light, and asking others to help, which is not the great late at night when others are sleeping.

So, crap eyesight aside, I do like the unique formatting. I've always liked "putting together the pieces" with epistolary novels. I liked the commentary of surveillance camera guy. And Hannah and her cadre of fellow rebels are pretty likable. The diary is decently done, but again, I really couldn't read any of the text which was supposed to be "partially obscured" but the bloodstain. The illustrations were pretty cool.

And the plot was pretty strong. A rather lame cliffhanger at the end, and then some huge loose ends

. That was fun. The explanation was a real head-slapper, but it was a great plot development.

How do Hannah, Nik and Jax (a love triangle) compare to Kady and Ezra? I liked Hannah better, actually, and Nik was also compelling with a decent backstory. So, I liked them. As as for the Kadezra shippers, fear not - they will appear. The adults are once again mostly just stupid doofuses or else evil incarnate. As an adult, I guess that sound about right for YA fiction.

I guess next time around I'm going to need to try some form of "Whispersync" but with the paper book and audiobook, unless the publishers through me a bone and make the hardcover, while beautiful, easier for old fogies (I'm 45 by the way, I'm not freaking ancient, but I have had bifocals for over a decade and have cataracts - yeah crappy eyes) to read.
