3.5 Stars. If I loved romances 4 stars. Quinn is a lovely writer. I enjoyed her writing, her humor, her characters, her setting and, for the most part, her plot turns. As I was somewhere in chapter 8 I thought, hey, I'm reading a romance and maybe enjoying it. Then I saw I was not even halfway through the audio book, because, I was about ready for it to be done. Because romance has to have tension and distress and I usually feel manipulated with all the drama and dialogue, and I definitely felt this way in the second half of the book. And, often, I don't understand why some of the characters make the decisions they do. But that is all part of the Romance Genre. I'm trying to beef up my knowledge of romances a bit for work and she is a recommended author. She also has some spice in her novel.
The love story here was generally sweet but I couldn’t get on board with the age gap- specifically because he knew her when she was so young. I realize that was “the time” but it just felt a little too icky at points… I also get tired of the “ugly brunette and her pretty blonde friend” archetype that comes up constantly in this book. The characters were likable though and the side characters were pretty funny. 2.5⭐️
Honestly, I'm having such a hard time rating this book.
Miranda is easily a 5-star heroine. I love her. She's charming, witty, strong - everything I look for in a good heroine. Probably one of the best heroines in historical romance in my opinion. And I love the premise of the book. Awkward little girl falls in love with her best friend's older brother and nobody knows.
The first half of the book is so lovely and charming. Even Turner's real inability to go back to the carefree persona of his early years was understandable, and he was still likeable.
But after the MCs finally sleep together, Turner is just UGH! He's so totally wretched and for no good reason. He doesn't cheat or anything; he's just distant and unlikeable. Even knowing about his awful first wife and his fear of being cuckholded again, I just have no sympathy for the guy. I know that this is supposed to be the drama that the MCs overcome to get their HEA, but it's just so petty and stupid. Poor man, so afraid to love (eye roll). I got so sick of reading his inner ramblings. He's really a 2-star hero.
Anyway, besides my dislike for Turner, I loved everything else about the book, so I'll go with 4 stars overall. There were some scenes that I was actually laughing out loud for, which like never happens for me. The dialogue is just really witty. Highly recommend.

Your best friend wants to set you up with her younger brother because YOU WOULD BE SISTERS!!! The only problem is that you’ve been in love with her older brother since you were 10 👀
I love that this had little diary snippets through the years as a kind of long lover letter to Nigel(Turner) who had given Miranda her first journal 10 years previously. And I get that he did a really kind thing and he’s the only one who truly sees her, but damn if I didn’t despise him most of the book 😂

I love this book. I may be a bit biased as it was also the first romance book I've ever read. I like it though. It's an easy read, cute, and the characters aren't too complicated. Sometimes they can get a bit annoying but what characters don't? Miranda and Turner each have their moments where you want to slap them, but its a romance novel I feel that should be expected. The plot is not much of a plot but there are some more heart wrenching moments which I always love in a book. I prefer my romance novels to be simple reads anyway. Nothing to insanely special but a good read all the same. I've read it a few times and it has become one of my go-to books.
I remember when I thought her heroines ALWAYS gave the hero a black eye. Not bad!
So much fun riiiiiight up until about 2/3 in. And then Miranda's sensibilities did a 180 (she turned into a silly, emotionally oversimplified trope) and Turner got to continue being a lazy, spoiled, irresponsible, emotionally moronic dickbag without being called on his shit by neither Miranda, his mother, his sister or even the narration itself.
I even skipped the last two love scenes (and hell, I never do that) because I was so damn irritated that a book that started so well could spiral into such pathetic, old school romance-level idiocy.
