Currently reading this one for the third time because it is just that damn good!
First of all, this is supposed to be the first one but if you haven't read the short story published in "On the prowl" (like me), it will be difficult to understand the beginning. Briggs starts right where the story cut off, after Charles kills the alpha of Anna's pack.
At first, I couldn't understand why she reacted the way she did (even though we have a few clues) so I had to buy the e-version of "On the prowl" to really get it(thank God for that, I couldn't have waited for the morning to go look at the two lonely english bookstores in town!). If you don't read it first, it feels like you're missing a chapter or two!
But once I got into the story of Anna, it was really good? She's an omega which means she's outside of pack hierarchy and she can calm down any wolf so when a rogue starts killing outside Bran's home, she and Charles go into the mountains to invetsigate.
I love love love Patricia Briggs. i'm a big fan of Mercy so when I saw that this serie is set in the same universe I decided to give it a try. And I was not disappointed! I still prefer Mercy but whereas she's a badass, Anna's vulnerability and broken soul really touches me. I'll definitly read more of thsi.

LOVED this one -- my first by Patricia Briggs, and I can't wait to read others.
The novella [b:Alpha & Omega|5393637|Alpha & Omega (Alpha & Omega, #0.5)|Patricia Briggs|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1368147080l/5393637._SY75_.jpg|5461162] must be read prior to this book. In an ideal world, Alpha & Omega would be the first few chapters of this book, as there is zero space between them. They are one continuous story.
I’m not sure if it’s the short, gloomy days or an antidote to holiday cheer, but I’m consistently in the mood for some paranormal this time of year. Despite the expectations set by this cover (omg, this cover), this was surprisingly good. The plot was engaging and despite some repetitive language, it’s better written than is commonly found in the genre.
While it’s classified as a romance, the romance is relatively minor. This is a “fated mates” scenario, so they’re linked almost immediately and the romantic storyline is more about them getting to know each other. It's very nearly a closed-door romance, which is rare in the fated mate genre. The main storyline is about a mystery in the Cabinet mountains of Montana. Overall, it’s more like the TV show Grimm and even reminiscent of American Gods.
The setting is what spurred me pick up the book. I’ve spent a good amount of time in the area. It was well described and so much fun! It is every bit as lovely and inhospitable as described.
I have two reservations: The first is that the powerful female characters are evil and it feels like feminine fragility could potentially be over-admired. The second is the portrayal of Native American “magic.” On one hand, the book borrows characters from folklore from around the world, and it’s reasonable that a paranormal novel set in this area would have a Native American character with paranormal abilities. On the other hand, I’m sensitive the frequency of creators profiting from the use of stereotyped Native American archetypes. I’ll be looking for both in the second novel.

Meh - struggled through this one and usually I really like Patricia Briggs' writing. Something about the POV maybe? I like Mercy's first person. Never felt super invested and/or cared about Anna or Charles that much - a lot of the fun them-figuring-each-other-out parts seemed to have happened in #0.5 which was a bit lame in my opinion.
4.5 stars!
I'm still not sure how I will end up liking this series compared to the Mercy Thompson series (which I absolutely loved), but it is so good to be back in this world. The main thing I'm noticing and guessing is that there will be more focus on the relationship/romance aspect of things, partly because Anna's a werewolf AND she's an Omega, which is a very different role than that played by Mercy Thompson. In addition, Charles is a much older wolf than Adam, so that aspect is also different. Overall, I think I'm going to like this series very much.

I've loved this series from the get go. The thoughful, detailed and finely drawn characters. The destinction of what Alpha, Omega and submissive means. The quality of pack dynamics and how the different personalities come together as a whole.
Of course I adore Mercy's series, which is of course the same world but distinct with a different point of view.
Charles and Anna's path ans growth is so interesting and fun.

I like Briggs.. and I liked this one better on the second read.
And evidently even more on the third. :) Brigg's ability to cut to the heart of relationships is incredibly moving. And way better than "just" a werewolf story.

Just reread the first book in the Alpha & Omega series. After reading the latest installment in the series, Burn Bright, I was stunned by the parallels between the two books. Without spoiling the story, this first book is an amazingly sweet romance in an urban fantasy setting. Anna is an omega wolf. She was brutalized by her original pack. Yet her spirit is never broken. When Charles, the enforcer for the Marrok, comes to Chicago to remove the unbalanced, corrupt alpha, his wolf instantly recognized Anna as his mate. This story begins shortly after their first meeting. Anna returns to Montana with Charles. The couple is gingerly exploring their relationship when a rogue werewolf attacks a park ranger in the wilderness. Accompanying Charles into the wilderness, Anna sees Charles in his job as the pack enforce.
I'm a big fan of Briggs' the Mercy Thompson series so of course I've been wanting to check out this series. First let me tell you, you must read [b:Alpha & Omega|5393637|Alpha & Omega (Alpha & Omega, #0.5)|Patricia Briggs|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1368147080s/5393637.jpg|5461162] first or you'll have no idea what is going on with Anna or the relationship between Anna and Charles. Second, I didn't think I would like this a much as Thomspon series but I dare say I enjoyed it as much if not more. I look forward to reading the rest of the series. If you are already a Briggs' fan then you should definitely check this out, if you like adult werewolf or supernatural fantasy then for sure give this a try.
