This was a YA thriller that discusses a lot of dark themes. It certainly showed how much impact words have in high school.
I REALLY enjoyed the paranormal aspects in this book. I thought it all played really well with the dark atmosphere. Them feeling haunted seemed a bit like a metaphor for the guilt they felt. It haunted them the same way Emily did.
Jodi had so many valid feeling and insecurities that really resonate with me. She feared her friendships and created false scenarios in her head about her friends icing her out. She was dealing with being the average Jo surrounded by rich and popular friends. She really didn't stand a chance. What really made Jodi different than them was that she was a kind person. Even if she didn't like a person, her intentions were never to hurt them. At the end of the say though, she was just another person trying to fit in.
I wish that we got a bit more fromJulien and Jodi's relationship development, but maybe that's just because I love a good romance. I don't really believe he was just using her. Nor did I believe him when he said he didn't like her when Emily accused him of it. There's no way he didn't like her much at present. you can't tell me that he didn't CARE about her. Rescuing her from the car, rescuing her at 2am from her dad, and driving to get her from the party.
In the end you can't say that the thrashers didn't care about Jodi. They did. A lot. But not more than they cared about themselves.
Julie Soto did a fantastic job of showing us that these rich kids with horrible reputations were still just another group of kids. Just like anyone else. Their money didn't magically protect their emotions and feelings. But it DID protect their actions.
But just when Julie has you convinced these kids aren't so bad, she reminds you who they are.
I hated how in the end (but I'm also ok with it. It's VERY realistic), Julien went to jail because of what he did, but everyone else got off. Turns out they were just good liars. I LOVED the epilouge. Made me laugh after all the trauma the characters endure.
