In this next installment of the National Park/Anna Pigeon series, Anna is security ranger/medic tent worker at a spike camp for a squad of firefighters in Lassen Volcano National Park. (If you have no idea what a spike camp is, I didn’t either…this book actually explains some of the National Park service jargon a little better than previous books). The weather is turning and they are about to be pulled out when they get a call that a worker is down with a broken leg on the line. Her and a few others go to carry him out when a gust of wind creates a deadly firestorm.
8.5 of 10 for enjoyment, 4 of 5 for readability. I’m happy to see four books into this series that these books are all very different. Some have complicated plots, some are more straightforward, some are more about the park, and some are more about the mystery. This one was more straightforward than the twisting and turning plots of previous books which led to it being a more simple read than others from this series.

I love Nevada Barr's settings! I am more neutral about the primary protagonist Anna Pigeon. And I generally don't like any of the other characters. This particular mystery is almost of the locked room subgenre. After running to escape a fast moving fire, several firefighters and rangers end up stranded far away from their base camp, with one of the rangers found dead after the fire passes them.

Go Anna Pigeon, Go! This book was a great reminder of why I am not a firefighter-her descriptions of the wildfire were terrifying. The human interactions were also scary, but in Anna's characteristic fashion, she thought through all the options, craftily talked to all the suspects, and figured it out in a satisfying way. Thanks for the fun read, Ms. Barr!

Harrowing but a great read
I've read about a real life firestorm and I think this novel describes it well. The murder in the middle makes the investigation and survival more intense. I have trouble with all the new names each book but the characters are well defined. I can at least identify them by personality.

This was my favorite Anna Pigeon serial yet. The brutal tale of a fire suppression team's survival through a wildfire (and firestorm) would have kept me engaged, even without the murders. What an excellent page-turning read this turned out to be!

I haven't read a Nevada Barr book in a long time. I always have trouble keeping track of her characters, who always seem to be a small group of possible suspects isolated by circumstances (like guests in a creepy house, except instead they're out in the wilderness) but I still enjoyed this one quite a lot, and I'd like to read/listen to more.

Right out of the gate this one is exciting as hell. It sure got my heart racing! -- The middle of this one dragged a bit. Stranded, still stranded, still stranded. But the end was good. I pegged the murderer, though not all the details, and also pegged the slight twist at the end, which I approved of. All in all I rated it higher because it prompted me to go out and learn some stuff about fires and firestorms that I didn't know before.
