DNF: The plot sounds amazing! But I personally can’t keep reading due to the language and my own biases.

Woa

This book will flat out give you emotional whiplash. I mean it has all the feels. Its got a healthy dose of reality. On a side note. Stop treating people like trash.

Half the stuff I didn't understand because of the Australian slang, but it was a learning experience ;)
Okay this book was way better than expected. Like holy crap. So real and so raw
Even though Charlie and Hammer were two characters I could not relate to too much and they did some really stupid stuff, it all made sense because you could understand their background and where they were coming from and it hurt so much
It was nice to see some realistic LGBTQ storylines portrayed of ordinary people that also deals with (toxic) masculinity, mental health, rural and religious backgrounds, internalised homophobia etc.
Definitely recommend it

Once Invisible Boys destroyed my emotions, it delivered a satisfying ending that left me with an immense feeling of pride. I thought it would read like a Will Kostakis or Alex Sánchez novel (you know the ones I’m talking about), but instead I found a cinematic sensibility in Sheppard’s writing more akin to Patrick Gale and Christina Lauren. It was enjoyable like YA, yet engaging like literary fiction, and absolutely perfect for anyone looking for a reason to cry.

This is such an important book and should be on the list for senior English in the Australian curriculum. 100%.

Wow, what an incredible debut novel. I’m still reeling from all the emotions this book managed to draw out of me. It’s an unflinchingly honest and confronting look at gay life in rural Australia for three teenage boys. The story depicts the crushing effect of small mindedness and homophobia on each of them from the town’s residents, their friends and most sadly of all, their own parents.

One of the best books I’ve read this year. One of the best Australian books I’ve ever read.

I think these characters and their stories will stay in my thoughts for a long time to come (and when I leave my teenage boys home alone from now on, I will forever remember the universal truth).
