ok so i have lots of thoughts about this one. i was initially so intrigued by this premise (a feminist retelling of 1984 from the perspective of julia)
reading this defo sparked some nostalgia for my a-level english lit lessons
i think where the book falls short is how the writing style was so far removed from orwell's (despite maintaining some of his core ideas)
although it touches on some compelling women's issues, it didnt quite explore party ideology quite the same as orwell (not to mention the room 101 scenes)
i also felt as though the last two chapters were bizarrely out of place
it was always going to be hard living up to the accolades of a classic but i enjoyed reading 'julia'

Up until part 3 I was going to give this a 4, Julia was infuriating and painted to be this sex-obsessed villain. But after the Ministry of Love, I truly loved the revaluations that she went through. I truly felt transported, I think a far better ending than 1984. Also when she met Big Brother I think I would’ve reacted the same way if I met our “Big Brother” now. Also in part 3 it brings hope but also an understanding that even the people fighting the “party” may not always be the savoirs you hoped for them to be.

I enjoyed this book, it does expand on the world of 1984 but in some ways this also waters downs his world. It is hard to describe and you should read the original first before lifting this one. There are obviously some choices made by the author that are not in keeping with Orwell's work and I am not sure they always pay off.
