Now, I definitely know this is not a mind blowing piece of literature. Did it gloss over a few things that could have made the book better? Yeah, of course. However, it's still a nice story which punches you in the heart a few times. The author remembers what it's like to be a teenager, which makes bring up your own nostalgic memories. Which to be honest are of course full of angst and love. Throw in domestic abuse, bullying, lots of 80's pop references, and you got yourself a nice fluffy story. Which all in all, is what it's kind of supposed to be. (There is vulgar language though, you've been warned.)

I wasn't feeling this book. I just wasn't. And I am extremely disappointed. I thought for sure I would love this. I feel HORRIBLE for giving this book 2 stars, but it just doesn't seem to deserve any more than that.

Eleanor & Park was very draggy, and dare I say it - over dramatic. The characters were not very interesting, and I didn't like any of them. Everyone had such dull personalities. I didn't even feel that much of a connection between the two lovebirds. Plus the story was so repetitive, and I never once felt the need to keep reading. It felt like the author tried too much to tone things down that it felt a little boring.

Towards the end it did get a little bit interesting. Things were starting to unravel and finally, I felt a little excitement. But then I was given a crap ending. Um, what?

I'm sorry. I just didn't love this book. Didn't even like it.

I am being generous by giving this 2 stars. It was just bad. Boring and repetitive, and no chemistry at all. It just didn't work.

I think it's safe to say that Rainbow Rowell is becoming a new favorite author of mine. This book sucked me into the story and its characters in all the same ways that Fangirl did. I found myself anxiously waiting to continue reading the story during the day, as though Eleanor and Park might do something drastic or need me there badly during my non-reading hours and it would ruin everything. And much like Fangirl, I found myself eventually just sitting down and ignoring everything for a few hours so that I could finish it - and then being sort of sad it was over, because now what?

As a high school English teacher, I thought of dozens of students just like these characters, not necessarily with the familial situations, but with the desire to belong and not at the same time. This captures the young adult voice so well, both male and female. It does have strong language, but it thought it added to the authenticity of their voice, the reality of their world and situation. I loved these kids.
