These guys are the reigning masters of subtext. Love the way that the words and illustrations complement each other and make the story so much more than it would be with only one or the other. And, of course, love the dog, who's the real unsung hero of the tale.

Cute & clever.

Sam and Dave dig a hole...missing a lot of treasure along the way. They dig for so long that they fall asleep, and wake up once they have fallen back to earth.

A great choice for reading aloud to a slightly older crowd, since they will pick up on the subtle details (and the twist!).

Very funny story where the pictures tell a large part of the plot.

Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett is a great picture book about two brothers who dig a hole as far down as they can to try and find treasure. Sam and Dave dig and dig but never once find treasure. This book is interesting because the pictures tell a part of the story that the words don't. The whole time, Sam and Dave are so close to the treasure, but they always change directions right before they find it. I would use this book as a read-aloud in my classroom to show my class how different a story can be with and without pictures.

My Pre-K students loved!

My 5-year-old loved this book! The illustration style is appealing, and much of the fun is in the reader being able to "see" treasures in the dirt that our diggers don't see. We coached them from the sidelines, and read this one over and over.

This one was a hit K-4. The theories of what actually happened in the end were fantastic.
