What an imaginative book! It was so marvelously simple and yet so wonderfully loud. It charmed the socks off me.

This book had me feeling content, frustrated, and enjoyably bemused.  Barnett and Klassen are a powerful duo, and one I hope to see more of in the near future.  Klassen's illustrations and Barnett's text are intertwined in such a way that the entire book would fall apart if they weren't together.  Without the text, the boys' motivations would be lost, and without the illustrations, the irony would be gone.  Together, they stir up emotions in the reader from the rising action to the quite literal falling action.

This is a picturebook at its finest.

I read this at BEA. The humor is all in the illustrations and kids will love being in on the joke.

Sam & Dave completely had me until the very end. I love that the boys (plus dog) decide to dig until they find something spectacular. They keep stopping short and changing directions just as they are (unknowingly) about to uncover enormous, cool gems. So great for a discussion with kids about perseverance, and visually it's so fun. But then, the end didn't work for me. Ah well, maybe I gave up on it too soon.

The ending = ?????

I LOVE Jon Klassen. Another subtle, yet hilariously illustrated story.

Great pictures, and I love the seen-but-not-mentioned aspect, but I'm sad to say I cannot imagine using this in a library program (not that I'm rating it lower because of that, I'm just sad because of it). It's one of those books that is probably best at a one adult/one kid (or two, in a pinch) ratio.

I just love the work that Mac and Jon do. I don’t think I have read any of their books that I haven’t enjoyed and haven’t found myself wanting to talk about. What I love most about their books is that they are unique and so, so, so smart. Their books are like no other, and this book is no different. It has nuances you have to carefully look for, it has an ending that you can debate about for a very long time, and overall is just so well done. I think this, along with the Hat books, may be the best open-ended picture books out there. Just like wordless books, open-ended books truly invokes conversing. When I finished, I immediately asked my husband to read it, so we could discuss the ending. Travis Jonker has a great post about the different theories about the ending, but I warn you: there are spoilers in the post! Think of all the great conversations or writing your students will have/do because of this thought-provoking picture book.
