Huh. Not especially good story or art. And where'd all the dirt go? And why the heck would this be a Caldecott Honor? And that's not how you did a hole anyway.
A little strange but a lot of fun. Love the interplay with text and images. Almost absurd and surreal by the end but I dig it. ;)

this was very fun and i can imagine it being fun to read as a kid because you're being driven up the wall by how bad sam and dave are at finding things. and i loved the artwork especially all the little details in the last couple pages and all the humor that is carried in the illustrations!!
This book is a a great read aloud for children, as long as you allow plenty of time for them to scream at it between pages, haha :).
Great book about the importance of working hard and how sometimes things end up being spectacular even when they don’t end the way we think they should. Really kept the kid’s attention all the way through the book.

Such a CUTE book! The two boys decide to dig a hole, and they make up different strategies as they go; readers can see (but not read about) diamonds the boys miss as they dig. In the end they fall out of the hole, back to their house, and they remark it was "spectacular." I love that the book was a classic "kid" trope - digging a hole - with a funny twist and cute message.
Very much the style of one of my favorite illustrators, Jon Klassen, and cute and clever and quick.
