Simple text, but with the pictures it's hilarious.

A fun book to read w/ your kids. Madeline had already read it in her 1st/2nd grade class, but Amelia (4th grade) enjoyed it as well. Heck, so did I.

It's a humorous picture book, the illustrations of which will have your kids groaning at the close calls that Sam & Dave have on their adventure to find something spectacular. The finish is a bit open-ended & allows for fun speculation on what really happens.

Well. That was pretty spectacular.

I would have given this book three stars, but the two daycare classes and three kindergartens I read it to would have given it five stars. So I compromised with four. The kids absolutely loved it and shared all of their way-out theories with me of what actually happened in the story.

I know Klassen is not the author here (Barnett wrote this, and Klassen is the illustrator) but it has a similar vibe to Klassen's stories: darkly amusing.

Review of the smallest member of the household: "They kept missing the gems. Awkward!"

I just read this and I'm not sure if I should suspend my disbelieve or assume that the children just died. I have questions.

Fun to read with a small child that can see everything Sam and Dave are missing.

Such fun and the illustrations are marvelous. An altogether too rare children's book where the illustrations are crucial to the humor of the story.
