Super cute (and a little bit frustrating) and even makes you think at the end. Had us ladies at the library in a pretty good debate.
July 2017 - I read this while filling in at preschool storytime (it was a big hit) and then took it home for Ben. He gave it the ultimate stamp of approval - we finished it and he immediately wanted to read it again. I love the uncluttered illustrations and deadpan humor, and the way the story drives kids crazy. I'm also tickled that Ben loves flipping back and forth between the first and last pages to note all the differences.
Barnett and Klassen have done it again! This beautifully illustrated picture book would generate great discussion in a school-age storytime. I'm still scratching my head at the ending, but I loved every page.

I liked that Sam and Dave keep digging until they found something special. That kind of determination and imagination is what I remember having when I was a little kid. Even though they didn't really find anything, they had fun doing what they were doing. I almost wonder if they were playing pretend and weren't really digging at all.
Two boys dig a hole in their yard with the help of their dog, because they want to "find something spectacular." As they change direction to dig sideways, the pictures show them just missing discovering large diamond-shaped objects, which the dog DOES notice. Very cute to see what happens when they get to the literal bottom of the hole! Lovely colored pencil drawings in muted earth tones suit the text.
