A fun little tale on how perseverance will get you results.
Caldecott Honor Book
"On Monday Sam and Dave dig a hole until they find something spectacular..."
This book has a dry comic voice which recounts a quintessential childhood activity of digging a hole. This book will appeal to both children and adults and the pictures will leave the readers talking long after the story is over.

These two don't make bad books. They, and the people behind them, just plain get it. Fond memory of laying (lying?) between my two cute kids, lingering on a page as they both deliciously groaned at the protagonists' next choice. Checked it out at library. Loved it. Found little hidden, subtle gems throughout. Bought it. Will reread many, many times. Nice work, gentlemen (and the team that put it together).
Younger kids will delight in watching Sam and Dave repeatedly dig around the spectacular thing they're looking for. I liked the subtle change at the end, but I don't think most kids will catch it on their own.
I debated between giving it 3 or 4 stars. I finally settled on 4 because I do plan to recommend it to others and I think it offers a great opportunity for kids to interpret and debate their understanding on the book. Really, I feel like is kind of like an idea mash-up. One thing is going on, the boys take a rest and... What the heck just happened to my plot line? Interesting and funny book.
A funny book about two friends who decide to dig a hole. Their dog accompanies them and always seems to know where the treasure is while the two boys always manage to miss it. The reader can see the diamonds which brings the humour that children would enjoy. The book could simply be read as a class read-aloud story with children enjoying the funny side. It could also be linked to PSHE and the idea that if you keep going and work as a team you will get to the result you want. The ending is quite bizarre but I think children would enjoy coming up with stories to explain how they ended up back at home. Some younger children may not even notice the fact that they fell down but ended up where they started, this could be an interesting discussion point which links to science. A nice book to read in KS1.
Funny story that sort of takes off your dreams of digging to the other side of the world.
