Plot or Character Driven: Plot

I personally think (unlike Christie herself) that Poirot is less good in short stories. Nonetheless it is often the case that the plots are clever

I liked this series a bit less as it all seemed a bit contrived to fit in with the Hercules narrative

Nói cho cùng thì mình cũng không đam mê mấy truyện ngắn kiểu này lắm. Mình vẫn trung thành với truyện dài đầy sắc sảo, miêu tả tâm lý nhân vật bao đỉnh của Christie hơn

Famed investigator Hercule Poirot is contemplating retirement and decides that before he is done for good he will accept 12 more cases that fit his criteria of the mythical labors of the Greek god, Hercules. As he is presented with opportunities to solve mysteries, he carefully considers whether the case would fit into one of the twelve labors. If it doesn't, he declines.

This was not my favorite. It felt very forced and frankly was pretty tedious to read. I felt like it was a real stretch creating mysteries for the great Hercule Poirot to solve that aligned with the labors of Hercules. It was an interesting idea but I personally don't feel like Christie executed the idea in a way that felt plausible and interesting.

The book is a series of short episodes that echo the labours of Poirot's classical namesake, Hercules.

Poirot is completely switched on, even when solving 'lesser' crimes to do with drug dealing, theft, blackmail in addition to murder and attempted murder.

I prefer the more developed mysteries in Christie's other novels, but I still found each episode highly ingenious and Poirot as charming as ever.

Too much Poirot. I got tired of him.
