The Apples of the Hesperides was truly beautiful, a favorite to be sure

This collection of short stories details one of several of Hercule Poirot's proposed swan songs: here, he decides to take 12 cases which will symbolically represent the 12 labors of Hercules. The stories are well-imagined as stand-ins for the classical labors.

A disappointing collection that is nowhere close to Christie’s best.

Well paced stories with good subtle humor and interesting locations, the twists are classic Christie.

May’s prompt was  ‘Detectives’ so I picked The Labours of Hercules which is a collection of short stories where Poirot decides to take on 12 labours of his namesake before his retirement which turns out to be 12 new mysteries to solve.

I really enjoyed this collection! There were a lot of already known characters that feature such as Chief Inspector Japp and Miss Lemon. It was great to read a group of short stories for a change where I enjoyed them all, it is a rarity for me! It was easy to dip in and out of too as and when I felt like it. I definitely recommend for a nice, easy read when you just want a short story that you can unwind with if you aren’t in the headspace for a more in depth read.

This is one of the most enjoyable Poirot’s I’ve read! The twelve ‘final’ cases Poirot takes on in his labours of Hercules read as twelve short, but entwined stories, which keeps them all so interesting and fast paced. The bizarre variety of cases is extremely entertaining, and I loved the first one where Pomeranians have been stolen! This was a joy to read and something I’d absolutely recommend if you’re looking to get into classic crime, as it has all the best features of Poirot stories (with the exception perhaps of his grand reveals) but in less than 50 pages per tale!
