So That Happened

“How bad can it be? I’ll even take the bed closest to the door so I get murdered first.” I stare at her blankly and she adds, “you know, like in Schitt’s Creek.”

I guess I can safely assume that, like Taylor Swift, I'm about to be locked out of my own kingdom. The silver lining (because there's always a silver lining, no matter how thin and flimsy) is that I'm not the Kanye West of this particular scenario.

Annie smiles and moves to let me drape the jacket around her. She shivers when my fingers graze her shoulders, and I try to ignore the way my heartbeat picks up.

“Vulnerability is not about winning or losing, it's about having the courage to show up even when you can't control the outcome.”

“I’m not to be underestimated.”
“I could never underestimate you.”

“I like to take the scenic route.”
Annie’s lips twitch. “There is no scenic route.”
I run my eyes over her pink cheeks and glittering eyes. “There most definitely is.”

“I ran all the way here,” he explains with a grin. “I wanted to tell you that I was thinking about you. And I missed you. And to give you this.” He grabs my waist and tugs me toward him. He kisses me. Hard.

“All I want is what’s best for you. Always.”
“I think you might be what’s best for me,” I reply, drawing her closer still.

“I love you way too much to let myself become your biggest mistake.”
“It could never be a mistake to love you, Annie. Loving you is a privilege.”

But loving Liam Donovan has been the most perfectly imperfect journey of my life so far.

Another cute read! Predictable, but I don’t mind it at all. I knew right away when he mentioned a new hire that it was Annie. Really like Luke and Liam. And Legs was adorable. Just wish the nickname was explained sooner, or maybe I’m just dumb. I didn’t get that Legs was her nickname because her name is Allegra, just wasn’t obvious to me. I wish we got a better description of whatever the heck the app was they were working on though. Unless I missed it? Lots of cute moments/scenes. But overall a cute read, no complaints when I need something happy to read.

I am rating this book 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

So That Happened is the story of Annie and Liam, who meet in a slapstick-y "you-can't-make-this-up" encounter on an airplane that leads to them sharing a hotel room or a night as strangers. Their lives meet back up soon after and their love grows organically. Bailey writes this part of their story really well, and I was highly invested in their story. This is a fade-to-black romance which I don't typically prefer, but it is well done. The scenes are no more explicit than a typical rom-com movie.

A couple of hang ups in this audiobook were: the male voice actor, who is surely talented, was just not what I envisioned for Liam and it tore me out of the story every time. I have truly never had beef with a casting choice but I can't figure this out and it grated on me for the entire book. The grumpy x sunshine trope runs deep through this book, but Liam's voice actor was jolly/upbeat/salesman-ish.

Content-wise, Annie and Liam's story lacks a lot of conflict and got a tad boring in the last quarter of the book. I think the mommy/daddy issues were supposed to be really problematic, but they weren't. And while I love a slow burn, this was sooooooooo slow, I found myself wanting to skip past what felt like a few mundane chapters. There was also an opportunity for Annie's ex to be more of a villain than he ended up being. I do want to say that I appreciate that there weren't many huge miscommunications (or lack of communication issues) but I was yearning for something ...interesting.

There is an audio content error at the 56.1% complete mark (with 4 hours 11 minutes left), where some portion of audio is cut out (couldn't tell you how much) and skipped over.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for giving me this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this! Annie is such a likable character, kind of a mess and definitely speaking without thinking but also confident in her abilities. Liam is such a type-A grump so watching him let loose and fall in love with Annie was a great read. I laughed a lot and really enjoyed the sibling banter between Liam and Luke as well as the sweet relationship between Liam and his niece. I really enjoy a dual point of view story and this one has that as well. Great, sweet and clean read.

Romantic Content: Kisses

I liked it, but didn’t totally love it. The concept A+, but I felt the writing was a bit juvenile, the relationship moved very very quickly and found myself wishing this was an open door romance book to help add a little interest to it. (And trust me some of my favorites are closed door) I don’t think that I, a woman in her 30s, was the target audience for this book.

“Annie, I don’t know where you’re going or what you’re doing right now, but I know that I want to be by your side for the journey. Whatever that looks like.” He stops. Smiles. “It was a mistake not leaving with you tonight, because being by each other’s sides, through good and bad, is what comes first. It’s what you do when you love someone.”
