Themes of identity and family and the after effects of the first series create an incredibly entertaining and compelling sequel.

3.5 stars. This didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by the first volume in this run, but it was still pretty good.

):

It's so difficult to find a fresh take on Batman, and Murphy continues his brilliant start from White Knight. Love seeing how the different facets of Gotham react to the implosion of Batman. Definitely relies on the context from the previous volume, so it's useful to have a copy handy for skimming while reading this one.

The sheer style of Sean Murphy's art (and Hollingsworth's colors) alone make this comic deserving of 5 stars, but Murphy's writing could easily earn it another 5. It's insane how Murphy re-imagines these well-loved characters without sacrificing what we already love of them or pigeonholing them, like other Batman writers can do. Without giving anything away, there's also great risks took in the narrative, and they not only pay off in the current storyline, but they set up for imaginative, original, and genuinely compelling future narratives. I'm on the edge of my seat, waiting for Beyond the White Knight and anything else Murphy comes up with next!

This book just rehashes all the beats of its predecessor. The good and the bad but mostly in a less effective way.

The new villain is set up as this great threat, but his power isn’t earned. They’re a random person who’s the most dangerous person ever not because they should be but because the story requires them to be.
