Hero at the Fall

Alwyn Hamilton

I. I don’t have any words. This whole book. Its a masterpiece. I have cried. I have sobbed, screamed, screeched, and laughed through my tears. I’m nit even exaggerating. Have i become way too attached to these characters? Maybe. Do i regret any of it. Definitely not. Just. Just a warning. Don’t get too attached and have some tissues ready. That’s all thanks for coming to my resurrection party bc this book is simultaneously my cause of death but also the reason i still live.

Actual Rating: 4.25 stars

I can't believe how much I enjoyed this because I haven't really connected to the characters so far in this series. The plot was quite fast moving and there was constant action. I really liked how everything played out and that we got a glimpse into what they did after the rebellion.

I really liked the whole series, but this one stands out to me because there is more magic involved. We see the Demdji and Djinn flex their powers and we can see how the magic works. ✨ I love that throughout the series you keep learning how it works, and the author does a great job of bringing it all together here.

Also in typical Hamilton style, we get some great reveals/surprises. Which is my favorite thing in a book. I also liked the relationship developments better here than in the second book. And then she subsequently kills a bunch off and you have to deal with that emotionally lol.

A bit of a slow starter for me, but about halfway through it picked up and I really enjoyed the resolution for the most part.

But honestly...I just couldn’t get into Jin and Amani. I needed more character development and a happier ending for Tamid (this feels like my reaction to Red Queen all over again).

3,5/5 stars

Okay so here is the thing: I loved the second book. It was one of my favorite books of 2017. This one, however? I just kind of ... didn't.

I felt like Amani went through so much character development in the second book, but I didn't see any of this in the third book. It felt like we were back to square one again. She makes stupid decision, after stupid decision, and somehow it just always MAGICALLY work out just fine. Ugh, I hate that.

Boy, the time when Amani died I was honestly like: okay, let's get back to the people who REALLY matter, like Ahmed or Shazad. But then, SURPRISE SURPRISE, she magically is resurrected. It is fitting that I read this during Easter time, now that I think about it. But honestly, I would have liked the book more had the author really been brave enough to go through with this storyline, but alas ...

Additionally, the book, for my taste, was just too long. All of this could have been said in fewer words, and fewer chapters. I was bored throughout most of the book, which was probably mainly because I didn't care for the main characters THAT much (except Shazad and Ahmed, those two !!!! I would die for my Sultan and General tbh. Amani who?)

I don't know how to properly express my feelings of this book ... but it was a bit of a let-down.

If you haven’t read Rebel of the Sands or Traitor to the Throne there may be some spoilers for those in this review, but I’ll try to keep this spoiler free for the final book!

This is everything I need from the conclusion to a trilogy. It has that wonderful coming together of strands of story that I need in a third book. What I appreciated about this book is that it beautifully flows from the first two books, nothing feels like filler in this trilogy. But, unlike some finales, this didn’t devote half the book to the final battle (I’m not against that as a concept, but I rarely see it done well). From the beginning, these books have been about journeying, about finding a safe place and the camaraderie that can come from traveling. It is therefore quite fitting that the plot of this book takes place in a plethora of different locations. It also adds to the worldbuilding, enriching and developing things only hinted at in previous books.

Amani continues to be a great character. I’ll grant that she has changed a lot since the first book, but given all that she goes through, I think that it would be odd for her to be the same? Of all the characters, it’s her development across the trilogy that really spoke to me. Gone is the girl who just wanted to get out of Dustwalk and in her place is someone willing to sacrifice everything, and at the same time completely aware of her own limitations.

Alwyn brings back all of our most favourite characters, it’s kind of like a reunion of sorts. Since one of the big selling points of this series is the range of characters, this was to be expected. What I wasn’t anticipating was how Hamilton would RIP MY HEART OUT AND THEN STAMP ON IT REPEATEDLY. No spoilers of course, but prepare to be on an emotional knife edge for the entirety of this book.

When I think back to the first book in this series what I remember is that it was fast paced and left me wanting more. Hamilton’s writing style has improved and developed so much since then, this book is a testament to her abilities and to the way trilogies can get better and better with each book (though I know some people will disagree because they didn’t like Traitor to the Throne). I was hooked from beginning to end but left feeling satiated.

Should you read this? If you liked the first two books in this series I would definitely recommend reading the conclusion as it is wonderful. If you’re wondering if this series is for you – it probably is.

I bought this book myself, all opinions are my own.

My rating: 5/5 stars

A wonderful ending for a wonderful series. I can't wait to read what Alwyn Hamilton has in store next.

Good conclusion to the series.
A lot of action.
I liked the small stories that happened between the chapters and wish that there were more of them throughout the series

First two books were way better. This book was like the author was just trying to wrap stuff up and invented new rules for the magic. Still a fun book to read, but only to know how it ended.

OMG this book was sooo good! It was a perfect ending to an amazing series. I could not put this down and I ended up reading it in one sitting. Amani and Jin finally had their happy ending. My heart. So amazing. 💛💛💛💛
