I just couldn’t get in to this one, part of it may have been the fact that I was trying to read this during a late summer vacation so the book setting and world setting didn’t really mesh. However, towards the end I was just skimming trying to get to the end and just never felt a strong connection to the characters or world.

“Some people are repelled by darkness. Others are drawn to it”

This book is very special. It’s special because I know Schwab put her heart and soul into it which made me enjoy the story a little bit more because I find Schwab just so utterly wonderful and forever want to enjoy her books.

The atmosphere and the story is definitely a love child of Crimson Peak. The darkness, the sadness and the lingering ghouls that hide in corners and haunt Olivia. There are even sad piano scenes that take me straight back to the film.

I think the writing is great and reminiscent of an old Schwab and her first book The Near Witch. It felt like such a mix of The Near Witch and Addie LaRue when reading this. Especially Addie LaRue when it came to Olivia and her family torment as well as Deaths Character.

This book is very lingering. It holds onto you if you put it down and it’s hard to step out of this world specially if you enjoyed Crimson Peak as there is something so bleak and beautiful about this sad story and that you can’t help but let your brain obsess over it a little. I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere a lot in this book.

I’ve felt personally a bit discounted from Schwabs writing lately since I personally didn’t enjoy Addie LaRue and I believe if you enjoyed Addie LaRue you would really enjoy this book as it feels like a bonus story of that. I don’t know if it’s just because I’m always putting Schwabs books on a pedestal and always getting underwhelmed by them as my expectations are usually pretty high but all in all the story was enjoyable to read and I did end up reading it all in one sitting. It’s a lovely book and a enjoyable enough read but I didn’t love it as much as I hoped.

VE Schwab is an artist. I love her style of writing…. It is so thoughtful and you can tell every sentence has been carefully crafted. Gallant is atmospheric and Gothic and packed with many passages that are so lovely and profound that you want to read them over and over again.

This book is slow paced but there is a strong, foreboding sense of building tension that drew me right in and got me reading the whole thing in one day. I even lit candles because I felt so atmospheric.

The drawings were beautiful and added an additional layer of complexity - it was fun trying to decipher their meaning.

Would recommend to those who love books about things that lurk in the shadows.
