I have been going back and forth with picking this up for reading. Honestly I felt really intimidated. I knew I would love it and I knew I would cry. So I did. I am not sure what I can say about this book which hasn't been already said. It is not a pleasant read. Anything about Holocaust cannot be even remotely pleasant. But it is essential. The story of Art, Vladek, Anja and all the survivors is important to be heard. The atrocities committed against them by the Nazis and the conditions they were forced to live in will break your heart. Not only Nazis, but their own people were not willing to help each other and they turned on each other. That's how ugly it gets during war. It is all about survival. Saints don't survive, crooks do and one cannot fault someone for trying to survive. The use of animals in the art to represent the jews and Nazis is actually great. It is a creative and innovative way of storytelling. The artwork is amazing and being black and white suits the overall tone of the book. Even when this book tells the story about the darkest period in recent history, the deep familial relationship is just so complex and beautiful. It's a masterpiece and a must read for everyone. It is honest and raw. It is bound to make you feel and atleast once during reading, it would make you feel grateful to just be alive. This book is worthy of all the praises it gets and even more.

This is the graphic novel that started my love for the format. The way that maus explores generational trauma is so real. As the child of someone who survived a horrific war and was shaped by it, this novel evoked many complex emotions.
