It’s not hard to see why Maus was the first graphic novel to win the Pulitzer Prize. Through the story of one man – Vladek Speigelman, the author’s father – we experience the utter horror that was the Holocaust, as well as see the lingering generational trauma it left behind. Vladek is clearly scarred by the war, and some of his most exasperating traits, like his hoarding and his stinginess, seem to stem from his time in the harsh and unforgiving conditions of Auschwitz, where those traits were what helped him survive (along with a healthy dose of sheer luck). Yet it’s also easy to be sympathetic to Art’s impatient attitude towards his father; understandable though Vladek’s flaws may be, Art is the one who’s had to deal with them his whole life, and without having gone through what his father has, it’s impossible for him to ever truly understand his point of view. Yet that’s exactly what this book is an attempt to do: in portraying all of the misery and hope and grief and fortune that occurred over those years of Vladek’s life, Maus makes the unimaginable suffering of the Holocaust feel just a little bit more imaginable.

An important beautifully written and illustrated book. Seeing the holocaust through anthropomorphic animals does not make it any less harrowing.
[4.5] i’ll be honest, im not a huge fan of the art style, but i think anthropomorphism made it easier to differentiate the characters. the story was so powerful and heart-wrenching. like, if you haven’t cried during this comic at least once, there’s no hope for you :)

"The Complete Maus" was painful to read and see. The screaming faces of the Jewish mice as they are crying for their lives, the nooses tied around their necks for chapter headers, the images of children being flung against walls. It is very graphic and horribly unsettling.
As it should be.
