suffering does not make you a good person, it just makes you traumatised - you can survive a fucking holocaust and still be racist

Wow.

There are so few words for so many emotions.
I don't want to review because this book isn't about me. It isn't for me. This isn't my healing. But I'm grateful that it was shared despite the heartache.

Just know that you should read it. I don't care if you don't like comics. I don't care if you think you're above reading a book with illustrations of mice/cats/pigs in place of humans. Read it.

I’m old enough to remember when this first came out, but for some reason tried to get into it a few times with no luck. This time, however, it worked! Clearly the masterpiece that many claim it to be.

such an innovative way of telling a story and it definitely made a difference! I've read and studied a LOT about WWII but this art style just gave it a twist that made it feel new and original. My favorite parts were the ones occurring in present-day where he was talking to his dad and step-mom and seeing their interactions. It made them more human for sure, and it showcased Vladek's personality outside of his trauma and Nazi camp experiences. very well done piece of literature!
