Senior year, I did a report on the movie The Pianist (based on [b:The Pianist: The Extraordinary Story of One Man's Survival in Warsaw|128066|The Pianist The Extraordinary Story of One Man's Survival in Warsaw, 1939–45|Władysław Szpilman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1491050715l/128066._SY75_.jpg|815447]). Viewing as a low-brow teenager, I had never seen anything like it. That movie may have turned me into an empath.
I ended my presentation to the class with the following takeaway: "This really happened."
Some people laughed and I'll never forget that.
Like what I said was so obvious, it wasn't even worth mentioning.
Back then, maybe that was true. Today, maybe not.
Maus disguises itself in a similar way to [b:Animal Farm|170448|Animal Farm|George Orwell|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1325861570l/170448._SY75_.jpg|2207778] - attributing human struggles to the animal kingdom to make it more palatable for the reader. While it explores one man's fight for survival despite incomprehensible loss during the Holocaust, the book also touches on the author's relationship with that man - his father.
There's survivor's guilt - when you outlive everyone going through the same traumatic event. Then there's another type of guilt associated with never being able to comprehend what survivors endured.
I don't think some people are capable of understanding the atrocities committed by man or the terror fellow humans continue to face on a daily basis. It's too dark, too deep. Maybe they'll understand when the story replaces actual people with cats and mice.
Either way, this really happened.
This is really happening.

Desolador. Cuesta creer que la crueldad humana no tenga límites, pero así es.

I love the portrayal of the different groups with different animals. The back and forth between the past and the present was also very cool.
