I think I expected more. There were small hints criticizing the policies of the soviet union but I expected this to be a bit more extensive.

sneaky political criticism and hilarious characters, with a touch of gothic poor things/frankenstein medical gore. dark and bright at the same time. genius.

Maybe I lack the context to appreciate this book enough. But it surely wasn't as fun. I couldn't enjoy it as a book that talks about what being a human entails, as a book about the relationship between a man and his creator such as Frankenstein. Nor could I enjoy it as a satire.
Nevertheless, it was somehow thought-provoking. Why a dog to begin with? I couldn't understand the professor's issue with socialism. He seemed like a hypocrite. It didn't seem like a well thought criticism.
One thought I think I got from the book and liked is the idea that some people from very poor backgrounds use that as an excuse for their behaviors, just like sharik.

Gogol and Bulgakov had a fraction of the same mind
