I don’t know if it were me or the book, but I had little idea of what was going on after chapter 1 😂 something something freemasons?

Took me longer to read this one cuz I just didn't get into it as much. Most of the book is back story so Holmes and Watson barely appear. It was somewhat interesting, but just not my fave. I still think the short stories are the best.

Great read! I most certainly enjoyed the story and the wonderful plot twists. Overall, a worthy read!

I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, but didn't love the second half. I enjoy Sherlock Holmes and find it out the mystery, but the habit of the books laying out the backstory in this way isn't my favorite.

By far my most favorite Sherlock Holmes mystery to date! I love stories within stories and I absolutely adore Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s mysteries that come with an intriguing backstory. This was no exception. Similar to a Study in Scarlett, half of the fun was the American background of the characters and their cahoots and adventures in the Wild West. Phenomenal plot twists that felt completely organic.

Had I finished this at an earlier hour I'd go devour the next book right away! Unfortunately, it's 4 in the morning and I haven't slept...

The ending is quite the cliffhanger (good thing I bought the next 2 books together with this one). It somehow reminded me of the first book of Holmes as it followed a similar format of storytelling. I liked it the first time though I was confused reading the first few chapters. Encountering the structure once again was somehow less enjoyable since part of the thrill is in not knowing how and why the story is unfolding in such way. Between the first book and this one, I prefer the first. Probably because of the romance aspect of the story. I like the ending of this one better though since I didn't grow such an attachment to the protagonist of the mystery unlike in the first story where the hero had to die due to sickness in the end...

I wasn't able to deduce the truth before it was revealed but that may be due to my sleepiness haha.

This Sherlock Holmes book is darker than most of his other stories. I found fascinating his description of an Appalachian coal mining town.
