Романите за Шерлок Холмс бледнеят пред разказите. Ако не бях фен едва ли бих дал трета звезда.

Not my favourite of the Sherlock series, but great to fall asleep to. I much prefer the short stories to the longer novels.
It was one of those dramatic moments for which my friend existed. It would be an overstatement to say that he was shocked or even excited by the amazing announcement. Without having a tinge of cruelty in his singular composition, he was undoubtedly callous from long overstimulation. Yet, if his emotions were dulled, his intellectual perceptions were exceedingly active. There was no trace then of the horror which I had myself felt at this curt declaration; but his face showed rather the quiet and interested composure of the chemist who sees the crystals falling into position from his oversaturated solution.
When I started this book, I thought this could potentially be a rival to my dear favourite Hound of the Baskervilles - but I was sourly disappointed. The first half of this book is excellent, rife with all the typical Holmes ingredients and tropes that everyone knows and loves, and then we leave Holmes and Watson to explore a minor character's backstory for around 90 pages, only to return to our beloved protagonists to muse on the situation for a measly 2 pages. If only Doyle had trimmed down the backstory or excluded it altogether...the saving grace of this book is the first part, which, as I say, is brilliant, and the author's writing, which is as crisp as always, but this is definitely my least favourite Holmes instalment thus far.
