Singular Case !
That was a thrilling story ! It got that Mafia/Godfather kind of background and I loved it for it ! And what an amazing twist at the end. Didn't see that coming at all !

Can't believe Moriarty was involved even in this. Sherlock Holmes merely scratched him that time I am guessing. But of course he has to go down !

This was an excellent story but it lacked Holmes involvement in this case. Few deductions which were relatively easy. So that was a bit of drawback in my opinion, otherwise it was perfect !

Despite having read all the Sherlock Holmes I could get my hands on as a child, I don't remember ever having read this book. I enjoyed it. Some of the initial twists were a complete surprise, and I liked the extended narrative in America (which reminded me in format of Study in Scarlet). The novel is a touch confusing, coming in publication order after the Return of Sherlock Holmes (3rd collection of sort stories) but set some time before "The Final Problem," which is in the 2nd collection.

Still, overall, a fun read.

Nggak begitu bagus. Soalnya Sherlock Holmesnya cuma muncul di awal sama akhir

3,5 stars!

Read as part of Phoebe Read's  a Mystery.

This is not my favourite ACD books, I was a bit disappointed with it. Essentially  it is a story of two halves. The first half is your typical Sherlock Holms novel, then the second delves into the backstory of one of the minor characters.

The second part of the book felt very different to the first half, and I did loose interest quite quickly,

Thank God this is over cause let me tell you, it was a struggle. It took me almost five whole months to finish this (and would have taken even more if I hadn't decided to read Proust in French).

I wanted to be kind and give this at least 3 stars, I mean, it's Sherlock Holmes, and I've romanticised everything that has to do with this character. But alas just the thought of giving it a higher score made me remember all the times I tried to keep on reading and just gave up insted. It doesn't signify much anyways.
As for the actual review part of this review, the story was alright until half-way through. After that, I could not care less about the characters nor the story which unfolded, which was when reaching the end of this book became a chore. I guess the last chapter was kinda interesting? Though I also kind of saw it coming (I had two ideas of how it would go, and the other seemed a lot more involved for the number of pages there were left).
So yeah, not a fan at all, would not recommend.

I love this so much. A great Sherlock mystery that the developer into a larger, deeper story with a fascinating main character and a twist that hit me like a brick wall.
