Following the deaths of her husband and son, Helen Cartwright returns from sixty years in Australia to the English village of her childhood. Her only wish is to die quickly and without fuss.
Helen retreats into her home on Westminster Crescent, becoming a creature of routine and habit. Then, one cold autumn night, a chance encounter with a stray animal on the street outside her house, sets Helen on a surprising journey of friendship and a way back into life itself.
My Thoughts
I absolutely loved this book 📖 ❤️
It is a beautiful tale of an elderly lady and an unlikely friend who gives her purpose, joy, and love, opening up a community of caring, kind people.
This story is...
🥰 Charming
✍️ Beautifully written
🐁 Shows the power of connection
💖 Heartwarming
It made me smile from start to finish, and I would recommend this story to readers young and old. It reminded me of a female version of 'A man called Ove' by Fredrik Backman.
It's beautiful.
Go and buy it mow!
You won't be disappointed 💛📖🐁

a cozy and short novel about a woman waiting to die and how she finds something to live for again. Helen Cartwright has lost her husband and her son and now she is back in her hometown waiting to die. she has her daily routine of listening to the radio to make breakfast and knows her tv schedule. her neighbor throws out an old fish tank filled with junk and at the top is a toy that reminds her of her son. this book is kinda sad ngl because she talks about her life like its over and shes kinda given up until she finds a little mouse in the pile of things. at first she doesn't want to invest too much because shes gonna die soon anyways but the mouse in her house leads to her building a community around her. she makes friends with the hardware store guy who sold her rat traps, the local librarian and her son when she picks up books about caring for mice and eventually a local heart surgeon when the mouse has some medical problems. turns out shes ellis grey if ellis grey had empathy. she has a heart surgery technique named after her! but i love watching her be so against investing in anything to her having all these people over at her house to help with the mouse. thank god they were all there because the mouse eventually gets better and goes back outside and she has a hear attack because of it! he village rallys around her to help her feel better about the loss of her mouse. i loved the community building. loved how she breaks out of her shell. a bit sad but i think a happy ending
