I'm not a fan of this particular genre of mystery novels, but Bauer's writing made it an easy read.

Couldn't think of a better book to read in a power blackout by the light of a camping lamp! The characters and the plot twists kept me immersed until the very end. John Marvel is a wonderful creation and I hope for more of him.
Bauer doesn't write your run of the mill crime novels. Each novel she writes is a drama, focusing on the tensions and pain that the families of victims suffer. She portrays the pain and emotional investment that the investigating officers go through, sometimes to the cost of their own personal lives. From each murder the repercussions travel to each person and she documents these intricacies so well. When most crime novels concentrate on the thrill of the chase of big serial killers, its refreshing to read novels like these which touch you emotionally.

This book had exciting moments but the plot was all over the place and I got so confused at times, particularly with the ending. There is a key part earlier in the book that makes the ending make sense, but the author doesn't come back to it, so until I was reminded about that part later (after reading some other reader's Q&As) the ending was a mystery to me!
Missing children, missing dogs, a physic, an inspector, a grieving mother, a recovering father, and the mechanics he works with make up the cast of this gripping mystery.
