An intriguing reentry into romantasy with a YA slant and a tip toe into themes previously explored by others books a la Carissa Broadbent.

as someone fairly new to fantasy and romantasy, i was a bit scared to actually start this. but man was i HOOKED!
this book was incredible. the pacing was perfect. the plotline felt so unique, not what i expected from reading the blurb on the back. all the characters were SUPER intriguing, even if you can’t see the true depth of all of them right away. and the romance was a cute subplot that isn’t much of a subplot but at the same time is; i love Ravyn <3
i struggled putting this book down every time i picked it up, and i feel like that’s all i can really say. a great read, and i’m desperate to see what happens next

For a debut novel, this was quite strong. What I enjoyed most was definitely the magic system, it was intriguing and original without being hard to understand. Another thing I quite liked was Elspeth's plotline with her magic, I thought her descent into madness added a needed interesting layer to the book.
With that being said, there are quite a few things that need to be improved. First of all, the characters are not as fleshed out as they could be. I waited for the author to show us more sides to our cast, but that just never really happened and I had difficulty getting attached to them. The same can be said with Ravyn and Elspeth's relationship. I couldnt root for them because they had literally no chemistry. Ravyn is especially boring and the fact that he and Elspeth exchanged a total of 4 conversations before falling in love really got me. like truly this kinda ruined the book for me, I wanted these people to know each other better but the fact that they got together so early pissed me off!!
But altogether, I still enjoyed what the author put out. Its just that sadly, this book had potential to be something I really loved, but because of its flaws that didnt happen.

This is what I want all fantasy books to be. I’m tired of all the fae and dragon narratives. This is just pure high class society with old magic elements. So fucking good!
