This book reminded me very much of being in my early 20s and drinking too much and being a mess. I couldn’t tell if I actually liked it, not much happens, but I didn’t want to put it down. It really worked for me. I wanted to hate Al but I also feel like I had been her, she’s figuring it out, we all get there eventually. Interspersed with playlists and musings from the Nashville music scene in the early 2010s. It was an entertaining read. Julien forever.

This started a little rocky for me but I really grew to love it. As someone who was single in Nashville during the time this book is set, it was SO nostalgic. Loved all the references. It felt like a slice of life story - not a ton of plot and a smidge of romance. Proud of this Nashville author and story!

This was kind of like My Year of Rest and Relaxation but for a depressed, alcoholic (drug addict?) 20 something girl working as a bouncer at a Nashville music venue. Much more vibes than plot but the vibe of drinking, drugs, rinse and repeat got old after the first 50 pages. That said, the author did make me feel like I was right there and her descriptions were perfect.

I just couldn’t move past the traumatic and unnecessary thing that happened just over 2/3 of the way in :/ that did not lead our character into any self reflection or change at all, but I guess that’s people. I considered not finishing after that scene but had to see if she learned from it (she did not)

Like I said, more vibes than plot, so a movie or TV adaptation might work better but with that certain scene altered.

The dialogue format took me out of the story a bit as I had to work harder to follow along.

8/10 ⭐️

Everything about this book screamed perfection. I loved Al and her messy life, her complex nature and not being able to decide what she wanted, to stop herself from falling in all men around her, to have not learned yet her boundaries.

Lo Fi reminded me of the wild times of partying and living my life to the fullest, being naive but dreamy. Reminded me how angry I still am of the pandemic stealing those last chaotic, exciting years of my youth.

If you were a musician or music lover in Nashville circa 2010 this is both wonderfully and painfully nostalgic- but even if you weren’t I think you could love this story.
