I think the only person more pleasantly surprised by this series is, well me. I am not kidding when I say that I found this series and conclusion satisfying. I'm not sure if it's because I was in the right mood for it or because the book is actually really well thought out and executed.
Lark Ascending went back to what I really liked about the first book and tweaked somethings that kind of deterred me from the second book to deliver what I would say to be a worthy end. Clark's character arc and really everyone's for that matter came full circle and played off really well. I believe going the route this book did paid off in the end. It was also really nice to see Meagan Spooner take risks and give the story and characters stakes in their choices. We are so used to seeing characters and stories setup a stake and then cop out and it was refreshing to see that not ALWAYS be the case here. I also, truly enjoyed the dynamic between Lark and Eve. It was well written and well delivered.
The Skylark Trilogy, although not perfect, was a fresh dystopian world that is beautifully written and captivating.
Skylark-4/5
Shadowlark-3/5
Lark Ascending-4/5
The Skylark Trilogy-11/15

So I listened this trilogy via audiobook and I have to say, I got really invested in the story. Unfortunately though, I did find the final book to be quite lacking and I was quite disappointed with the way how everything got wrapped up. Everything was just so good in the first two books that I was very intrigued by how everything will end but when I finally finished the last book, my only thought was “…really?” For me, that just kind of brought the entire series down because it’s never a good thing to end a series on a low note.
However, that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books. I really enjoyed reading about Lark and Oren. I also thought that the way how Meagan portrayed this dystopian world was very unique and intriguing – the fact that without magic and being a Renewable, humans cannot live outside any magical barriers otherwise they will turn into these shadows.
Another aspect that I really enjoyed was finding out how much Lark had changed from the beginning to the end. That’s something I always enjoy reading about especially in series – how much the characters, specifically the main character, changed throughout the books. And for Lark, she definitely matured and grew a lot by the end the story ended.
In terms of the plot itself, I really liked the progression of things and especially enjoyed reading about Lark’s journey through the wilderness to try to find her brother, Basil, as well as other humans and cities to escape her own. Another part that I found interesting was the shadows and what they represented as well as who or what they used to be.
Overall, while I didn’t enjoy the last book simply because I was disappointed by how things ended, I still, at the end of the day, found the overall progression of the story to be entertaining as well as the characters themselves. I especially enjoyed Lark and Oren’s relationship and how it felt really natural as opposed to falling in love at first sight.
